The EGU General Assembly 2024 brings together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience. The EGI Foundation is taking part in the Generally Assembly with the sessions described below, as well as with booth #101 in the exhibition area; come meet us!

ESSI 3.5 Advancing Research and Knowledge in Earth and Environmental Science Through Data Integration and Interoperability – Concepts and Applications from Multi-disciplinary Groups

In environmental and climate science, addressing challenges with holistic solutions underscores the vital need for data integration and interoperability. Our expertise as environmental researchers extends to engaging with research and e-infrastructures, fostering scientific development through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this era of big data, advanced methodologies and machine-to-machine (M2M) services are essential. Challenges in enhancing M2M interactions and enabling data and service interoperation arise as technology evolves. European operational infrastructures, such as Environmental Research Infrastructures (ENVRIs), the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), and e-Infrastructures like EGI, contribute significantly to scientific progress.
This session at EGU2024 seeks real-world examples from environmental and climate researchers across earth science domains. We invite data product developers, data scientists, and engineers to share insights, showcase research or scientific development projects, discuss challenges, and propose best practices in successful interoperability frameworks. We welcome expertise in data analytics, visualisation, data collection, quality control, infrastructure utilisation, and cloud services.

Mastering data integration, Virtual Research Environments (VREs), web services, and open science is crucial for environmental science. Our comprehensive course unites researchers, data developers, scientists, and engineers. Through hands-on learning, we delve into the pivotal role of data integration, VREs, and web services in environmental science. Explore the revolutionary landscape of distributed computing infrastructure and open data concepts, gaining insights into accessing cloud computing power. Learn to find and access datasets in platforms like the EOSC Marketplace, run scientific applications in the cloud, and tackle challenges in customizing and running data workflows using Jupyter notebooks. Guided by experts, attendees will explore science cases in ecology and biodiversity virtual labs, ensuring a comprehensive and practical learning experience.

This Townhall Meeting aims to give an outlook of new directions in scientific research that could be possible if online data sets, tools, and research infrastructures are fully integrated on a global scale across scientific disciplines as well as sectoral and national boundaries. This Town hall meeting is co-organised by ENVRI-Hub NEXT.
